BIRTH Happens!

Thanks to all our talented musicians and performers!

images/shana.gifShana "Banana" Smith is an award winning singer/song writer who began her career in 1999. Born in Hawaii she is a long time Florida resident and has a Master's Degree from the University of South Florida. Shana has a strong commitment to the environment and helping our children get the very best start we can give them.

Nashville Scene describes her as "a cross between Joan Armatrading, Cassandra Wilson, and the jazzy excursions of Joni Mitchell." Ft. Lauderdale's City Link Magazine remarks that she "sings with sophistication and style, calling into mind Pat Benatar-rock at one moment, and at another the keening of a Scottish lament." Listen.com said: "This versatile singer-songwriter can croon her way through smoky, late-night lounge jazz, or soar over uplifting, hand-clapping acoustic folk-rock." She performs nationwide, including some of the following noted venues: the Olympic Village in Atlanta, the White House, the Seattle Center, Florida Seminole Indian reservations, and at colleges across the U.S.

images/katz.jpg The Klezmer Katz stay true to the core Eastern-European tradition while blending Latin music and jazz into its repertoire of waltzes, mazurkas, and freilachs. Klezmer is a yiddish word describing the ancient Gypsy-like music played by Jews around the world. The group has a history dating back to 1999 and the current core of Klezmer Katz play throughout Central Florida at various festivals, holiday parties, weddings, private parties, synagogues and church functions. See the Katz in Gainesville at Lightnin' Salvage and Leonardo's 706. The Klezmer Katz music and showmanship stirs its audiences into dance, song, and emotional exclamation!

images/sweet.jpg Gainesville Harmony Show Chorus. History tells us that barbershop became popular at the end of the nineteenth century. With its four-part harmonies and ringing chords, it suited the sweet melodies and sentimental songs of the time. Men were first to take up the art, yet the melodies and lyrics also suited the female voice. The costumes and staging made it irresistible, so in 1945 the Sweet Adelines were born. In 1974 the Gainesville chapter was chartered and affiliated with Sweet Adelines International. Several years ago we changed our name to the Gainesville Harmony Show Chorus.

The chorus sings a wide variety of musical styles, including traditional melodies, rock, pop, Broadway, jazz and blues. The music is memorized and performed acappella. This allows us to sing with great expression and to include choreography. With the distinctive sound of four-part close harmony, we perform throughout the year at festivals, fairs, retirement communities, hospitals, nursing homes and business functions.
