BOLD (Birth On Labor Day) is a global arts-based movement inspiring communities to create childbirth choices that work for mothers.

Spend an evening enjoying our production of the critically acclaimed play Birth by Karen Brody. This BOLD event includes a Birth Fair, for businesses and organizations to come together with the community. A Red Tent will be available as a safe haven to share your birth story. Food, wine and live music round out this empowering evening.

This will be an independently produced fundraising and awareness-raising event. Proceeds will be donated to the International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN) of Gainesville and the Florida School of Traditional Midwifery. These organizations are dedicated in providing support and education to our birth community.

The International Cesarean Awareness Network
strives to improve maternal-child health by preventing unnecessary cesareans through education, providing support for cesarean recovery and promoting Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC).

Cesarean surgery rates are at an all-time high of 31.8%. Florida's rate is 37.4%, putting us second in the nation. Cesarean surgery carries twice the risk of injury an death for mothers and babies.

Research shows that Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC) is reasonable and safe for both mother and baby. A repeat cesarean should never be considered routine. With emotional support, education, and an honest opportunity, the majority of women can have a healthy vaginal delivery.

The Florida School of Traditional Midwifery (FSTM)
offers direct-entry midwifery educational programs which combine the art of traditional midwifery with today's knowledge of medical science in an environment that encourages students to reach their full potential. FSTM believes that it is their responsibility to promote awareness of and access to midwifery services.

FSTM faculty is made up of experts who are highly qualified in their fields, and motivated through their own experiences with midwifery and a dedication and desire to give something back to the midwifery community. FSTM believes it is essential for experienced midwives to be intimately involved with the education of future midwives. In their view, this sharing of the art of midwifery is one of the most vital components of a student's education. FSTM strives to honor the challenges inherent with the transition of a woman, in any stage of life, into midwife, recognizing that this transition is somehow linked to the transition a woman experiences in birth from woman to mother. They midwife the midwives, believing that the journey each student undertakes is a “labor” resulting in the birth of herself.

Honoring Shands AGH Maternal/Child Services for their
75 years of service to Gainesville's mothers and babies.

BIRTH is intended for mature audiences.
